Google Photos Redesign for iOS removes ‘Memories’, and adds Moments Tab.
Google Photos, the company’s photo-sharing and storage application, has released yet another update, and this time with new features for the iOS versions of the app. With this update, ‘Memories’, one of the most loved features on Facebook, is removed and instead is ‘Moments’, a tab that is expected to improve organisation and ease of finding content.
What’s New in the Redesign?
The redesign is more focused on a deep change to the layout of the app and the introduction of methods that help people revisit their valuable memories.
- Goodbye, Memories: There is no longer any option to choose featured memories from specific dates or travels, as was the case previously.
- Hello, Moments Tab: Finally, Instagram replaced the ‘Gallery’ section with something much more historic and contextual—the new ‘Moments’ tab. Organising it in categories such as activities, places, or events allows users to easily get a summary of their past experiences in those categories.
Why the Change?
According to the Google company, the new ‘Momels’ tab focuses on the idea of making the search much more personal and convenient. While ‘Memories’ was mostly an automated feature that attempted to compile posts in a way that resembles someone’s memories, the ‘Moments’ tab provides users with more organised content flows in a timeline manner with separate labels and better filters.
Other Features in the Update
The redesign also includes:
- Improved Search Functionality: For the case where one wants to find a certain image, the new-guard AI-progressive search suggestion presents images at a faster rate.
- Enhanced Navigation: Tabs are now more clearly differentiated to make it easier for those using the app not to get confused.
- iOS Optimisation: Some features that have been enhanced include better performance and better compatibility with iOS features such as Live Photos.
User Reactions
That fix receives a blended early response. Many users reviewed the My Family app positively over the fact that the new interface was refreshing, especially most of the users who complained of being frustrated over the lost ‘Memories.’
What’s Next?
Google is bound to receive some feedback on the changes, and there may be further changes in the subsequent releases. For now, while the new Moments feature is the replacement, iOS users can go to the app and see what it is like as opposed to the old feature.
This redesign is evidence that Google cares about continually updating its apps as the specific user demands them.
